How does this sound: seven miles of gloriously sugar-white beaches, sparkling green-blue waters, the warm kiss of the sun on your skin, perhaps some parasailing, early dinner at an award-winning restaurant and an enjoyable shopping venture, and a relaxing visit to an art gallery. If this appeals to you, then consider making Anna Maria Island your new home.
Anna Maria is a barrier island between the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay, actually comprised of three cities: Anna Maria City, Holmes Beach, and Bradenton Beach. A trolley traverses the island and many people enjoy strolling their way around the island. In its relaxed, laid-back style, Anna Maria Island offers an amazing variety of restaurants and shops.
Anna Maria City, on the northern end, features mostly residential homes, restaurants, and Bayview Plaza, a unique collection of shops offering art, antiques, clothing, candles, crystals, treasures of the sea, and jewelry.
Holmes Beach is the business center of the Island. Shopping centers, single family homes, condominiums, and businesses are all built to blend in with nature.
Bradenton Beach, on the south end, consists primarily of condominiums, luxurious resorts, and Gulf front rentals. The Island's fishing pier and unique shops complete the picture.
The original inhabitants of the Island were the Timucan and Calusa Indians. The Spanish arrived in the 1500's, including Hernando De Soto. In 1892 George Emerson Bean became the first permanent resident. During the early 1900's Bean began to develop the Island, laying out streets and building sidewalks and homes. It wasn't until 1921 that a bridge connected the Island to the mainland. The creator of the fig Newton, George Roser, built the first church on the Island, on Palm Avenue.
On today's Anna Maria Island, waterfront and dry luxury estates, villas, condominiums, fixer-uppers, and anything in between is available. Anna Maria Island offers an eclectic collection of home styles, something to accommodate anyone's tastes.
