Think of 12 miles of sun-drenched sand, championship golf courses, prestigious yachting and tennis clubs, lush tropical foliage, and indescribably beautiful sunsets, all just a short distance from the culture, art, and excitement of Sarasota. This is Longboat Key, a long, narrow barrier island between the Gulf of Mexico on the west and Sarasota Bay on the east. Longboat Key boasts the exclusive Longboat Key Club and Resort, offering world class tennis, golf, and dining. Colony Beach and Tennis Resort has been ranked the #1 tennis resort in the USA for eight consecutive years.
In centuries passed, Longboat Key was a "vacation" spot for the Timucuan and Calusa Indians. Their shell mounds have been excavated to tell the story of these hunters and gatherers. Hernando DeSoto visited in the 1500's but the first wave of permanent residents did not arrive until the latter 1800's when a Civil War veteran from Indiana, Thomas Mann, built a thatched shack on his 144 homesteaded acres on the north end of the island. His sons settled 144 acres on the south end. Thomas sold his property around the turn of the century for $500 and new residents began building their homes.
Longboat Key was incorporated as a town in 1955. John Ringling, of circus fame, built the first road in 1925. Today that road, Gulf of Mexico Drive, extends the full length of the island. The island is home to about 8,000 permanent residents and many "snowbirds."
Longboat Key consists mostly of single family homes and condominiums, and some older, smaller homes. Many of the older homes have been razed to be replaced by luxurious domiciles. Bay front, Gulf front, and canal homes are available in many price ranges, as well as some dry and waterfront vacant lots.
